Licence To Kill
June 29, 2007 | Movies

"You could have had everything." I wonder if Mr. Davi had some kind of premonition about the shortcomings of future Bond movies. Eighteen years later, I'm still waiting for one that can give me the same sense of complete satisfaction Licence To Kill did. I always found that Bond had one thing lacking in his movies and that was the ability to be taken seriously. If he wasn’t over the top then the villains surely were and it never gelled. True when it came down to business he always got the job done, but there was never a time in any of the movies when I wouldn't have minded it if he would've gotten picked off. This was definitely not the case with Licence To Kill. The story is about vengeance, and Bond is not taking orders. He has his mind set on what he needs to accomplish and this time Her Majesty's Secret Service can come along for the ride. Robert Davi is as cool as they come and was the perfect choice to play the role of the cold villain Franz Sanchez, but the surprise for me in this movie was the appearance of a very young Benicio Del Toro. Right then and there you could see his quality and magnetism, and have no doubts that he would be major star one day. Timothy Dalton's portrayal of Bond at his most rawest is fantastic and completely freshened up the franchise. Unfortunately, the audiences were expecting more of the Roger Moore era of Bond and so the studios returned to the old formula which guaranteed commercial success. However, die-hard fans will appreciate that the franchise was once brave enough to make a movie that took Bond back to his core character. You can clearly see Licence To Kill's influence in the latest offering Casino Royale, but the studios compromising and playing safe again turned what could've been a great movie into another dull disappointment. Bottom line, Licence To Kill is the complete Bond film. It has a great story, great characters, and great action. The cherry on top is the super soundtrack which features the excellent theme by Gladys Knight, and a complete gem by Patti LaBelle to take us into the ending credits. Find it, enjoy it.

Reaching for the Moon
May 15, 2007 | Movies

"So you're not coming. It was all....a joke." How do you heal? How do you mend a broken heart when you find out that the only person you’ve ever fallen in love with, belongs to someone else? Watching Reaching for the Moon was very touching and thoroughly enjoyable. Many of us know who Douglas Fairbanks is, but for those who don’t well let’s just say that if he were to be planted in space, he would light up the skies brighter than most stars. Very charismatic, and with a very contagious laugh, it was a lot of fun watching him go through the various stages of gaining the affections of the lovely Bebe Daniels. The setting of the story on an ocean liner was perfect and really added to the romantic atmosphere, and with the beautiful musical score playing from time to time, you couldn’t help but be seduced. This DVD version runs at just a few minutes over the hour mark and could be considered a shortie compared to today's standards, but that just gives it a repeat value for me. However, the quality of DVDs from Passport have always been a mystery. While they have produced great quality releases on many of the classics, they really missed the boat on this one. The less than expected quality and movie logo won’t deter die-hard fans from enjoying this gem from the past, but for those who expect nothing but the best, look for it on any of the classic movie channels.

Dark Blood by Swatch.
November 20, 2006 |

A thing of beauty is a joy forever. It’s not just what’s on the outside that makes a Swatch what it is, it’s the memories it brings back. The feel good factor and the smile that returns to a person’s face after seeing a long forgotten, dear friend. I was on the lookout for a new watch after going years without wearing one, and just wanted something simple that would last a long time. Swatch was a brand I had forgotten about. After all, it had been over two decades since I last wore one, and seeing them on display in the store was a pleasant surprise. I was spoilt for choices and after a good hour of pure bliss, I purchased the Swatch Dark Blood. The size, weight, look, price (a very reasonable $89.99), Quartz precision, it's all there. The Swatch quality shines through. Very simple, very sharp, and in every way a beautiful watch. Welcome back old friend.

The Witches by Roald Dahl.
November 16, 2006 | Books

More, more, more! I just couldn’t put it down. I wanted to stop myself and save some for tomorrow, but The Witches had me under their spell and I knew the only way I was putting this book down was when it was finished. Adventure, suspense, and humor, this 1983 Whitebread Award winner has it all. I’ve read a lot of children’s books and have enjoyed them all, but Roald Dahl will always be in a class of his own. I wanted to catch up on some reading and since it was Halloween season, what better than a story about our favorite broom riders and their battle against a brave albeit whiskery seven year old boy, and his lovable and wise grandmother. You’ll find magic, you’ll find potions, you’ll find love, and best of all you’ll find a perfect dose of fright as the story unfolds and lets us know that right now, at this very moment there could be witches in our very own neighborhood. What will you do? How will you be able to tell a witch from a normal person, and if you do find one will you be brave enough to fight it! Roald Dahl’s story telling is amazing as always and the illustrations by Quentin Blake deserve a special mention. His skill of just putting enough details into his drawings as to not take away any attention from what it’s supposed to portray is brilliant. His simple drawings immediately satisfy the images Dahl’s words had our imagination conjure up. A truly magnificent team, a delightful children’s book, and a must read whenever possible.

Chef! - The Complete Series One
October 17, 2006 | Movies

"Everton, let me explain things to you. In the world of cooking, I am Einstein, Lucinda is Isaac Newton, and you are a mud-dwelling unicellular bit of jelly with a predilection for consuming its own excrement." Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! A few years ago while dining at a hotel, I was fortunate to be within earshot of an interview in progress. It started off nice enough with the usual small talk, and then within minutes I and a few others were experiencing one of the most intense interview sessions I know I've ever heard, and hope never to be a part of in the future. Cooking is a serious business and the opening theme for Chef lets you know that it is indeed a 'Serious Profession'. After watching season one of this fantastic show I can appreciate the interview a lot more, and understand that chefs look at their efforts more than just a meal, but more as a work of art. The casting is great, and the writing is top-notch. A total joy and a must have in any comedy collection. Available for about under $20 at Amazon.com

DeskJet 3920 Printer by Hewlett Packard.
September 18, 2006 | Computer | Printers

As with most HP printers, the setup and installation was simple enough and I was able to print a test page within a few minutes. Even though the HP Deskjet 3920 was marketed to me as a great solution for people running small businesses, I found it more suitable for home users. While the price is very reasonable at around $59.99, the cost of replacing the ink cartridges (black & tri-color) can get steep, running from $10 each and upwards. I’ve been using it every now and then to print letters, stories, and the like, but cringe every time anything color intensive is required. Careful monitoring of the ink levels and disciplined printing habits can prolong the life of the cartridges, but for those who’ll be printing regularly it’ll definitely be bulk purchases from your local or internet supplier.

Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor by ACON Labs Inc.
September 10, 2006 | Health | OTC Products

A worthwhile purchase ($89.99) for those who suffer from hypertension and need to regularly monitor their blood pressure. I purchased this for my mother who battled high blood pressure for a long time and it brought a lot of peace of mind and is a real timesaver. The whole process takes less than a minute and its large display accurately reports systolic & diastolic pressures, along with the pulse rate.  The standard upper-arm cuff included with the Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor will be comfortable for the majority of users. A large cuff is available for purchase directly from ACON, along with an AC adaptor.  The kit comes with a very well-prepared manual, a carrying case, and 4 "AA" alkaline batteries. The battery life of the unit is about 300 uses, and its lightweight and carrying case makes it a complete package which can be taken anywhere comfortably.
